How it works

How to use URL Encode & Decode

  1. Choose Encode component, Encode full URL or Decode.

  2. Type or paste your text — the result updates as you type.

  3. Open the URL parser to see protocol, host, path, fragment and every query parameter.

  4. Edit, add or remove parameters and copy the rebuilt URL.

Why use it

Why use our URL Encode & Decode tool

Component vs full URL

encodeURIComponent for query values and path segments; encodeURI when you need to keep : / ? & = intact.

Form-style spaces

Optionally encode spaces as + or treat + as a space when decoding form data.

Clear error messages

Malformed % sequences are reported with the line and the offending characters.

Editable query table

Change keys and values in plain text — encoding is handled for you and the URL rebuilds live.

Runs locally

Tracking links, signed URLs and tokens never leave your browser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is URL encoding?

URL encoding (percent-encoding) replaces characters that aren't allowed in URLs with % followed by two hex digits of their UTF-8 bytes — a space becomes %20 and é becomes %C3%A9.

When should I use encodeURIComponent instead of encodeURI?

Use encodeURIComponent for a single piece such as a query value, because it escapes & = ? and /. Use encodeURI only for a complete URL whose structure must stay intact.

Should spaces be %20 or +?

%20 is valid everywhere in a URL. + means a space only in application/x-www-form-urlencoded query strings, which is what HTML forms submit.

Why do I get a malformed URI error when decoding?

A % must be followed by two hex digits, and the bytes must form valid UTF-8. A stray % (like '100%') or a truncated sequence causes the error.
