  4. Download the smaller PDF.

Why use it

Why use our Compress PDF tool

Two honest modes

Lossless optimization keeps everything intact; target-size mode shrinks scans and photo-heavy files hard.

Hit an exact size

Enter 100, 200 or 500 KB and we search for the sharpest result that still fits.

Lossless first

Target mode always tries a lossless rewrite first, so text stays selectable whenever possible.

Same page sizes

A4 stays A4 and Letter stays Letter — only the image resolution inside the pages changes.

Clear before and after

See the original size, the new size and the percentage saved before you download.

Never uploaded

Compression runs in your browser, so contracts, IDs and statements stay on your device.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two modes?

Recommended rewrites the PDF more compactly and removes metadata — nothing visible changes, but savings are usually small. Target size can turn pages into compressed images to reach a specific size, which is very effective for scans and photos.

Will my text still be selectable after compressing?

In Recommended mode, yes. In Target size mode we first try a lossless rewrite; if that isn't small enough, pages are saved as images, so text can no longer be selected, searched or copied. Keep the original if you need that.

Why didn't my PDF get much smaller in Recommended mode?

Most PDFs are already compressed internally. Lossless optimization only removes waste such as metadata and uncompressed data. For big savings on scanned documents, use Target size mode.

What if the target size can't be reached?

You get the smallest file we could make and a clear note that it's above your target. Splitting the PDF or removing unneeded pages usually solves it.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Encrypted PDFs can't be rewritten in the browser. Remove the password in your PDF reader (or print it to a new PDF), then compress the new file.

Is it safe to compress confidential documents here?

Yes. The file is processed by JavaScript inside your browser and never sent to a server. You can even go offline after the page has loaded.
