How it works

How to use Compress Video

  1. Drop a video onto the page — MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and more are read locally, never uploaded.

  2. Pick a preset (WhatsApp, Email, 720p, 480p or Convert only) or set resolution, bitrate and frame rate yourself.

  3. Choose a target size in MB or a bitrate and check the estimated output size.

  4. Click Compress video and download the smaller file — the before/after sizes are shown.

Why use it

Why use our Compress Video tool

Hit an exact file size

Enter a size like 15 MB and the bitrate is calculated from the clip length (minus audio) so the result lands just under it.

Smart presets

WhatsApp, Email, 720p and 480p presets set sensible resolution, bitrate and frame rate in one tap — tweak anything afterwards.

Convert between formats

Turn MOV, MKV and WebM into MP4, or MP4 into WebM. When the codec already fits, the video is copied without re-encoding.

Modern codecs

H.264 by default for maximum compatibility, plus HEVC, VP9 and AV1 wherever your browser can encode them for even smaller files.

Hardware-accelerated and private

Encoding uses your device's video hardware through WebCodecs — fast, and your video never leaves your computer or phone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a video to a specific size?

Choose “Target file size”, type the size in MB and press Compress. The tool divides the size by the video length to get the bitrate, reserves room for audio and container overhead, and encodes to that.

How much smaller will my video get?

Phone videos are often recorded at 15–20 Mbps; 720p at 2.5 Mbps is usually 80–90% smaller and still looks sharp on a phone. The estimated size is shown before you start.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

No. Compression runs on your own device using the browser's built-in video encoder, often hardware-accelerated. Large files never travel over your connection, which is also why it's fast on slow or metered internet.

Which codec should I pick?

H.264 (MP4) plays on every phone, TV and browser — pick it when in doubt. HEVC, VP9 and AV1 squeeze more quality into the same size but older devices may not play them. Only codecs your browser can encode are listed.

Why didn't my video get smaller?

If the original is already low bitrate, re-encoding at a higher bitrate makes it bigger. Lower the resolution, bitrate or target size — the tool warns you when the estimate isn't smaller than the original.

Which browsers can compress videos?

Compression needs WebCodecs video encoding — current Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop and Android, Safari 26 or newer on Mac and iPhone, and recent Firefox. The codec list only shows the formats your browser can actually encode.
