How it works

How to use Barcode Generator

  1. Choose the barcode type — Code 128 for general use, EAN or UPC for retail products.

  2. Type your number or text. For EAN and UPC you can leave out the check digit and we'll calculate it.

  3. Adjust bar width, height, colours and whether the human-readable text is shown.

  4. Download a high-resolution PNG or a vector SVG for labels and packaging.

Why use it

Why use our Barcode Generator tool

Six popular formats

Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 cover shipping, inventory and retail labelling.

Check digit built in

Enter the first 12 digits of an EAN-13 (or 11 of a UPC-A) and the GS1 check digit is added; enter all of them and we verify it.

Clear validation

Friendly messages explain exactly what's wrong — wrong length, wrong characters or a bad check digit.

Print-quality output

Export PNG at up to 4× resolution or as an SVG vector that prints perfectly at any size.

Offline and private

Barcodes are drawn locally in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?

For products sold in shops you need EAN-13 (worldwide) or UPC-A (North America) with a number registered with GS1. For internal use — inventory, assets, shipping labels — Code 128 is the most compact and flexible choice.

Can I make up my own EAN or UPC number?

You can generate a barcode for any valid number, but retailers only accept numbers issued to your company by GS1. Made-up numbers may clash with real products, so use them only for testing or internal labels.

What is a check digit?

It's the last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 codes, calculated from the other digits so scanners can detect misreads. This tool calculates it with the standard GS1 modulo-10 method.

Why does Code 39 change my text to uppercase?

Code 39 only encodes uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols (space - . $ / + %). Lowercase letters are converted automatically; if you need lowercase, use Code 128.

What size should a printed barcode be?

Keep bars at least 2 px wide for screen use and print at 2× or higher for labels. Leave the quiet zone (margin) on both sides, and test with your actual scanner before printing in bulk.
