FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses the time zone rules built into your browser, so New York is UTC−5 in January and UTC−4 in July, and Sydney's summer time in the southern hemisphere is handled too.

What happens to times that are skipped or repeated when the clocks change?

When clocks spring forward, a time such as 02:30 doesn't exist, so the converter moves it forward by the gap and tells you. When clocks fall back, a time happens twice and the first occurrence is used.

What is the difference between EST and EDT?

EST (UTC−5) is Eastern Standard Time in winter and EDT (UTC−4) is Eastern Daylight Time in summer. Picking America/New_York instead of a fixed abbreviation means the right one is applied automatically.

How do I convert UTC to my local time?

Set the source zone to UTC, enter the time, and read the row marked “Your zone”. Your zone is detected from your device settings.

Why do some cities have 30 or 45 minute offsets?

Several countries use non-hourly offsets: India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and parts of Australia UTC+9:30. The converter shows exact offsets for all of them.
