FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 240 is 0.15 × 240 = 36.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.

Why doesn't a 10% increase then a 10% decrease get me back where I started?

Because the decrease applies to the larger number. 100 + 10% = 110, and 110 − 10% = 99. Percentages are always relative to their starting value.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra 10% is taken from the already-reduced price, so the total is 28% off. The discount card shows the real combined discount.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

If an interest rate rises from 4% to 5%, it went up 1 percentage point but 25 percent. Use the percentage change card for the relative increase.
