How it works

How to use Decrypt File

  1. Drop the .mstbx file (or several) — Decrypt mode is already selected.

  2. Type the password that was used to encrypt it.

  3. Click “Decrypt file”. The original file downloads with its original name.

Why use it

Why use our Decrypt File tool

Original name restored

The name, type and date stored encrypted inside the .mstbx come back exactly as they were — no guessing the extension.

Integrity checked as it decrypts

Every 4 MB piece is verified before it is written. If even one byte was changed or the download was cut short, you're told instead of getting a corrupt file.

Large files, low memory

In Chrome and Edge you can save the decrypted file straight to disk while it is being decrypted, so gigabyte-sized files don't need to fit in memory.

Private

The password and the file never leave your browser. Decryption uses the Web Crypto API built into your browser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which files can I decrypt here?

Files with the .mstbx extension created by the Encrypt File tool on this site. Files encrypted by other apps (7-Zip, VeraCrypt, PDF passwords, BitLocker) use different formats and need those apps.

It says “wrong password or damaged file” — what now?

Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock and look-alike characters. If you're sure the password is right, the file may be incomplete — download or copy it again and compare the sizes.

Can someone recover the file without the password?

No. Without the password the file is protected by AES-256 and a deliberately slow key derivation. There is no reset or recovery option, for you or anyone else.

Is my password sent anywhere?

Never. The key is derived and the file is decrypted inside this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
