How it works

How to use Batch File Renamer

  1. Drop the files (or a whole folder) you want to rename.

  2. Add rules — find & replace, prefix/suffix, numbering, case, extension, date or remove characters — and order them top to bottom.

  3. Watch the live old → new preview; duplicates are highlighted in red before anything happens.

  4. Click “Download renamed files (.zip)” to get a ZIP with every file under its new name.

Why use it

Why use our Batch File Renamer tool

Stack as many rules as you like

Find & replace (with optional regex and capture groups), prefix and suffix, numbering with padding, start and step, case changes, extensions, dates and character removal.

Live preview with conflict detection

Every new name updates as you type. Clashing names are flagged (case-insensitive, like Windows and macOS) and safely suffixed so nothing is overwritten.

Dates from the file

Insert each file's last-modified date or today's date in any format — perfect for sorting photos and scans chronologically.

Safe names on every system

Characters Windows, macOS or Linux reject (like : ? * |) are replaced automatically, and reserved names such as CON are avoided.

Your files stay put

Renaming happens in your browser. Originals aren't touched and nothing is uploaded — you get a renamed copy as a ZIP.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I rename multiple files at once?

Drop the files here, add one or more rules (for example a prefix plus numbering), check the preview and download the ZIP. Unzip it and every file has its new name.

How do I number files like photo-001, photo-002?

Add a Numbering rule set to “Replace the whole name”, start 1, step 1 and 3 digits, then an Add prefix rule with “photo-”. Change “File order” to sort by name or date first if you need a particular order.

Can I use regular expressions?

Yes. Tick “Regex” in a Find & replace rule to use JavaScript regular expressions; reference captured groups with $1, $2 in the replacement. Invalid patterns show an error and are skipped.

Why do I get a ZIP instead of renamed files on my computer?

Browsers aren't allowed to rename files on your disk, so the tool builds a ZIP with renamed copies. Extract it and replace the originals if you wish — your original files are never modified.

What happens when two files end up with the same name?

They're highlighted as duplicates in the preview. If you download anyway, the second one becomes name-1, the third name-2 and so on, so no file is lost.
