Why use it

Why use our Black and White Photo tool

True grayscale

Colours are converted with the standard luminance weights (more green, less blue), the same way your eyes judge brightness, so skies and skin tones keep natural contrast.

Mono or Noir

Mono gives a clean, balanced black and white. Noir adds strong contrast, darker tones and a vignette for a film-noir mood.

Fine-tune the tones

Exposure, contrast, fade and sharpen still work on the black and white result, so you can lift shadows or add grit.

Full size, no upload

The download keeps your photo's full resolution and is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is black and white the same as grayscale?

In photo editing, yes: every pixel becomes a shade of gray from black to white, with the red, green and blue values set equal.

Can I make only part of the photo black and white?

Not here — the filter applies to the whole photo. For a sepia or faded look instead, try the Vintage or Fade filters in the same editor.

Will converting to black and white reduce the file size?

Slightly. A grayscale JPG compresses a little better than a colour one, but the file is still saved with standard colour channels for compatibility.

Can I get the colour back later?

Only from your original. The converted download contains no colour information, so keep the original file if you may need it.
