FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which favicon sizes do I actually need?

A favicon.ico (with 16, 32 and 48 px inside) for browsers and Windows, a 180×180 apple-touch-icon for iPhone home screens, and 192 and 512 px PNGs in a web manifest for Android and installable web apps. This tool creates all of them.

Where do I put the favicon files?

Upload them to the root of your website (the same folder as your homepage), then paste the HTML tags into the <head> of every page or your layout template.

What image works best for a favicon?

A simple, square logo or symbol at 512 px or larger, ideally a PNG or SVG with a transparent background. Fine detail and small text disappear at 16 px.

Why is my apple-touch-icon not transparent?

iOS shows transparent touch icons on a black background, so we fill transparent designs with white for that one file. Choose a background colour if you prefer another.

My new favicon isn't showing — why?

Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Hard-refresh the page, open it in a private window, or visit /favicon.ico directly to force an update.
