Why use it

Why use our Character Counter tool

Characters front and centre

The total character count is the big number, with a separate count that ignores spaces and line breaks.

Ready-made limits

X/Twitter 280, SMS 160, meta description 160, page title 60 and Instagram caption 2,200 — or set a custom limit.

Progress bar and warning

See how much room is left at a glance; the bar turns red and tells you exactly how many characters to cut.

Smart SMS counting

Detects when Urdu, Hindi or emoji switch a message to Unicode (70 characters) and shows how many SMS parts it will take.

Emoji-accurate

Counts real characters, so an emoji or accented letter counts once rather than as two hidden code units.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, on almost every platform spaces and line breaks count. That’s why the main number includes them. The “Without spaces” figure is useful for assignments or forms that ask for it specifically.

How many characters can a tweet have?

Standard X (Twitter) accounts can post 280 characters. X counts every link as 23 characters and some emoji as two, so treat this counter as a close guide for posts with links.

Why does my SMS limit drop from 160 to 70?

Plain Latin text uses the 7-bit GSM alphabet, which fits 160 characters in one SMS. Any Urdu, Hindi or Arabic letter, or an emoji, switches the whole message to Unicode, which fits only 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67.

How long should a meta description or page title be?

Google cuts titles by pixel width, which is usually around 50–60 characters, and descriptions around 150–160. The presets warn you before your text is likely to be truncated in search results.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, saved or logged.
